{"id":8245,"date":"2023-06-13T09:35:41","date_gmt":"2023-06-12T23:35:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/yinghuiinternational.com\/?p=8245"},"modified":"2023-06-21T09:37:07","modified_gmt":"2023-06-20T23:37:07","slug":"rio-tinto-china-baowu-work-to-decarbonise-steel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/yinghuiinternational.com\/index.php\/2023\/06\/13\/rio-tinto-china-baowu-work-to-decarbonise-steel\/","title":{"rendered":"Rio Tinto, China Baowu work to decarbonise steel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" srcset=\"https:\/\/secure.gravatar.com\/avatar\/d1700c9ea60efabea01d3ee5bd3bc8e8?s=100&amp;d=mm&amp;r=g 2x\" height=\"50\" width=\"50\" src=\"https:\/\/secure.gravatar.com\/avatar\/d1700c9ea60efabea01d3ee5bd3bc8e8?s=50&amp;d=mm&amp;r=g\" alt=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.australianmining.com.au\/author\/alexandra-eastwoodprimecreative-com-au\/\">ALEXANDRA EASTWOOD<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.australianmining.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/shutterstock_2180430397-1024x681.jpg\" alt=\"Rio Tinto has commended the Federal Government\u2019s emissions-reduction policy for providing support to heavy industry.\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Major miner Rio Tinto has joined forces with steelmaker <strong>China Baowu<\/strong> to explore ways to decarbonise the steel value chain in China and Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), the two companies will advance specific decarbonisation projects including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Researching, building and demonstrating a pilot-scale electric melter, enabling low-carbon steel making<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optimising pelletisation technology for low-carbon shaft furnace-based direct reduction<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Expanding China Baowu\u2019s HyCROF technology, which can mitigate CO2 emissions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jointly studying opportunities for the production of low-carbon iron in WA.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The MoU was signed in Shanghai by Rio Tinto chief commercial officer Alf Barrios and China Baowu vice president Hou Angui.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRio Tinto and China Baowu are united in a commitment to accelerating the delivery of low-carbon solutions for the entire steel value chain,\u201d Barrios&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.riotinto.com\/en\/news\/releases\/2023\/china-baowu-and-rio-tinto-extend-climate-partnership-to-decarbonise-the-steel-value-chain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis MoU aims to address one of the biggest challenges faced by the industry \u2013 developing a low-carbon pathway for low-to-medium grade iron ores, which account for the vast majority of global iron ore supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cChina\u2019s commitment to curbing emissions and promoting high-quality green development is strongly aligned with our own position where climate change and the low-carbon transition are at the heart of our strategy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rio chief executive of iron ore Simon Trott said the company is proud of its 40-year relationship with China Baowu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe look forward to progressing this study into the potential of low-carbon iron making in Western Australia as we work to ensure a positive future for Pilbara ores in a green steel world,\u201d Trott said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">China Baowu said the company is committed to working with Rio Tinto now and into the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith the mission of building an industrial ecosystem to promote the progress of human civilisation, China Baowu is committed to working with Rio Tinto to jointly study and provide low-carbon and green comprehensive solutions for the steel value chain, help the low-carbon transformation and upgrade of the steel industry chain, and support the world to address the challenge of climate change with pragmatic actions,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ALEXANDRA EASTWOOD Major miner Rio Tinto has joined forces with steelmaker China Baowu to explore ways to decarbonise the steel value chain in China and Australia.
